Gjirokaster Castle is the highlight of this ancient Bronze Age town. Cultural expert Eraldo Breshani showed Kathy around the castle complex, which contains monuments, ruins, two museums and an American military airplane that is the stuff of urban legend. The castle was originally built in the 12th century and is infamous for being used as a prison under Communist rule.
