The ancient city of Apollonia on the Ionian Sea was built by the Illyrians in the 12th century B.C. and attracted Greek and Roman elite, the latter of whom sent their children to study there. Today, visitors can walk among the ruins of several structures including an imposing odeon, a parliament building and a temple.
